Queer

While the LGBTQ+ community is divided about using the word "Queer", which was used as a slur in the 19th century, and later was reclaimed in the late 1980s, I am using it as I believe we all are queer in our own unique way, and should be proud of who we are, no matter what anyone says or feels.

As the Supreme Court of India is hearing arguments for legalizing same-sex marriages in the country, I felt it could be a good time to voice my opinion on the subject too.

I think human being by nature are fluid in their sexuality. Even our origin is not sacrosanct. As per scientists, all of us start our journey as being women - as in all human embryos are essentially females - and it's only in the second month that the gender development initiates. So, if we are fluid right from our conception, our gender and sexual orientation might as well be fluid too.

What defines a man and a woman, the gender binary? Is there any set definition? Is it only the physical attributes or the societal dictums? What if someone identifies themselves as a woman, despite physically being a man or vice versa? Human beings are complex creatures. We cannot box ourselves into defined parameters. Every individual has a separate identity, including their sexual identity, and we all need to respect that and create a safe place for everyone to express themselves.

If we, as a society, become more accepting, we would also be able to reduce sexual violence, both against men and women. Young adults will be able to explore their sexuality in a safer manner, question and experiment to finally figure out their sexual identity. And, this should not just be for the LGBTQ+ community, but for the entire community at large, without making any distinction at all.

An open society will lead to a more peaceful and cohesive world. Till then, let us all be "Queer".

Ayushmann Khurrana has never shied away from doing unconventional movies, and "Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan" was definitely a gutsy film. This song defines it the best - Love is Love! And, man he rocks in that nose pin 💓.
